A Brief History

1960 – Independence

Cyprus gained independence from British rule, and the new flag was adopted on 16 August 1960. It was designed by İsmet Güney, a Turkish Cypriot art teacher.

Design Philosophy

The flag avoided the colours of Greece (blue/white) and Turkey (red/white), symbolising unity between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Cyprus is one of only two countries whose flag displays the shape of its territory, making it instantly recognisable worldwide.

The Artist Behind the Flag

Ismet Güney, the Turkish Cypriot artist who designed the Cyprus flag

The Cyprus flag was designed by İsmet Güney (1923–2009), a Turkish Cypriot painter and teacher. His design — the copper-coloured island above two olive branches — symbolises unity and peace. Today it stands as one of the strongest visual symbols of the Republic of Cyprus.
