Cyprus Passion

The village of Pera Pedi can be found in the Limassol district just 4km south-east of the village Pano Platres. Pera Pedi is at an altitude of 770 meters and is built upon a very wide and level land but is also surrounded by mountains ranges.

The name of village originally derived from the actual land being ‘pedion’, which means flat and level. Although it’s located in the mountains where it shouldn’t have been level which takes us to the name Pera. Pera meaning across. So, across the mountains to the level area; Pera Pedi. Historically speaking the village was in existence before the period of the Frankish rule. It dates back to the 16th century where there is reference to Saint Mavri living here. It was said that Saint Mavri and her husband came from Pera Pedi.

When visiting you will see many vineyards, apple tree orchards, pear tree orchards and other types of trees too. Since Pera Pedi was one of the first villages to have produced apples, it’s now well-known for its apples. The Krios River goes through the village and there is around 800mm of annual rainfall. The population is currently 66. Nature around the village is amazing, you can find the Pera Pedi Dam, the Pera Pedi Park for kids and also a nature trails for hikes.

Pera Pedi Dam is found just 2km north of the village and is actually built over the Krios River. It was built in 1954-1955 and was built to help irrigate 14.7 hectares of land. The Dam also has attracted many aquatic bird species and fish. A cycle trail also passes by the Dam and many bird watches visit to see and photograph the birds.

The village park is perfect for families as there is  slides and wooden benches for parents to sit and watch their kids. It is also shaded from all the tress around and there is a parking area too. In the village you will find traditional style homes with cobble stoned streets. Beautiful colourful plants and flowers and huge trees providing lots of shade and coolness on hot summer days. The amazing Cypriot architecture can be seen throughout the village but one building will stand out. The British built winery which produces 3m black grapes each year.

A traditional watermill which has been in operation until the 1940’s and which is now a historical monument can also be found in the beautiful village.

You can find 3 churches in the village. Agios Nikolaos which was built in 1796 and houses 2 portable icons. One of the Virgin Mary and the other of Saint John the Evangelist, both which dates back to the 16th century.

Then there is the Church of Agia Paraskevi which dated to the 17th century and also the church of Saint Ioannis the Theologo, which was built in 1920.

Visiting the beautiful village, you will see the wonderful natural flora and fauna of Cyprus and breathtaking views of the mountain ranges.  Experience the cool breeze in the village square and immerse yourself in the Cypriot culture of the locals.
